Ohio Sphynx Rescue is an independent operation located in Northeastern Ohio. Recently we have been coming together with contacts all over the United States to form a more efficient National effort. We have all been working together for the good of the Sphynx! Our goal is to prevent any Sphynx from being needlessly put down at an overcrowded shelter or being left out on the streets due to changes in their family.
If you are interesting in adopting one of our rescue cats, please fill out and return the Adoption Application. Each applicant is extensively screened and all cats are evaluated to ensure that they are best suited for each particular home. Requirements for adopting a Sphynx from our rescue are: Homeowner or Renter with landlord's permission in writing, all current pets up to date on vaccines, yearly physicals and all cats altered and tested for Felv/FIV, and three references such as vet, groomer, family friend, relative. We don't adopt to just "anyone" and our screening process may seem like applying for a homeloan but please understand that we just want to make the best "match" for our animals and be sure that they are indeed going to a "forever home".
Our rescues come from all over the country (but mostly OH and the neighbooring states) and a lot of them have been through a real ordeal. We keep them in their "foster home" for as long as they need to become healthy and strong and ready to accept the challenge of moving again. Most are owner surrenders and are given up simply because the owners are moving or divorcing and can't take their beloved pets with them, although a frightening number have been coming from kill shelters. Occasionally, Sphynx will come from a "kitty mill" or "collector". In that case they may need more rehibilitating, socialization and patience from their new home.
Please be aware that this is not a place to get a "designer cat" at a low cost. These cats are not novelty items. Also, we hardly ever get kittens. If you are looking for a kitten, we would be happy to pass along the names of a few good breeders.
This Rescue "home" is run entirely by donation. Adoption fees that are charged are usually the vet expenses of the particular animal. In the event that a Sphynx' vet expenses exceed a moderate cost, ebay auctions will be run to help raise money for their care. These auctions can be viewed on ebay under the id "oh_sphynx_rescue". All proceeds go to help the Sphynx!
